Mezcal History

Mezcal is made from agave. It is another word for the maguey plant. The maguey plant is more well known as the agave plant.

Mezcal is a term used for any spirit derived from the agave plant. Mezcal is not to be confused with tequila as it is not tequila. Tequila is derived from Mezcal in some spirits which is called "Tequila de Mezcal".

Mezcal is made in the state of Oaxaca traditionally by roasting Agave in wood burning fire pits and then using copper stills to distill the mezcal. Good quality Artisan mezcal is made in small batches and aged. mezcal is a common ceremonial drink used for baptisms, weddings, and other celebrations.
